Movies: The Place Beyond The Pines

The lives of 2 people  sometimes get intermingled by coincidence. The outcomes could be very different for each of them. The movie "The Place Beyond the Pines" narrates one of those stories (imdb).

The blog doesn´t have spoilers, hence I won`t tell much about the plot. There is an underdog, who tries to escape his miserable existence as a motorcycle stunt driver at fairs. This connects him somewhat with a highly ambitious & ruthless cop that leads to dramatic consequences over many years.

Director Derek Cianfrance, who also wrote the script together with Ben Coccio & Darius Marder, delivered a complex and convincing study about fate & chances. You could see "The Place Beyond The Pines" as more than one movie. The 140 minutes don´t seem very long because they cover multiple stories about family, relationships, love & hate. You get a lot drama & emotions spiced with a bit of suspense and action and you could spot how good & bad luck play turmoil with lives.

"The Place.." gets its strength by the impressive action of Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in the leading roles, supported by the convincing Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta. Dane DeHaan proved his reputation as one of the rising stars in Hollywood.  Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt framed the different layers of the story into appropriate pictures. He also waked appetite to visit the movie`s location Schenectady in the federal state New York, USA (short "upstate New York").

I hope to see more in the future from this director and his team.
