Photography: Impressions From Pompei

(Drivebycuriosity) - My wife and I used our stay in Naples (Napoli) for a day trip to Pompei, which is just about 10 miles away. On Tuesday we took a ride with a commuter train to the huge excavation place. Pompei is very close, just about 10 miles from Napoli`s central station and the train ride from the neighborhood Vomero, where we stayed, cost just €3.50 ($4,20), but the train was slow and very crowed.

The excavation place is a huge labyrinth of small alley between the former houses. We could have explored many days there. But after about 4 hours we got overwhelmed with all the impressions and called it a day.

The houses belonged apparently to rich Romans, often retired soldiers who got rewarded by some estate and had enough money to employ architects & artists.

I was most impressed by the paintings. The sealing by thick layers of ashes, caused by the explosion of the nearby vulcano Vesuvio, kept the colors alive.

Apparently the Romans had developed a taste for art which could easily compete with the works of the Renaissance painters.

There were a lot erotic paintings. Pompei died before the prudishChristian overtook the Roman empire.

Above some bed scenes. Pompei also some public baths with images of the viral sex life in these times. Carpe Diem.

Above images from an artful designed yard.

I enjoyed the artful designed walls

Above more reliefs

Some of the colorful walls looked like pieces of contemporary art.

Above a marvel of interior design

There were also amazing ceilings

And I enjoyed the mosaics.

These castings reminded us that all the great impression are caused by a catastrophe and many people had died in agony.

Some of the houses & walls were impressive as well.

The walls show still the magnificence of these architects & sculpturers.

Yes, Pompei is a beautiful place.

No wonder that the place was crowded and many school classes expanded their knowledge.

To be continued
