Photography: Fountains Of Rome - Piazza Navona

(Drivebycuriosity) - Rome is full of wonders. Last Saturday my wife and I explored the Piazza Navona in the center of the eternal city. The place is an amazing example of Baroque Roman architecture and also the evidence how powerful, wealthy & eccentric the leader of the Catholic church have been. The piazza was apparently commissioned by Pope Innocent X, who reigned Rome & the Catholic Church from 1644 until 1655. The place was build before his family palace, the Palazzo Pamphili.

The piazza has three fountains and groups of sculptures which were all constructed by acclaimed artists, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who completed St. Peter´s Basilica and created a lot of other famous art works.

On the left side (when you look onto the Pope´s palazzo). According to Wikipedia there is a statue of a Moor, wrestling with a dolphin, created by Bernini (wikipedia ).

Anyway, the statue is really a beauty.

But I like also his companions.

Arent`t they funny?

                                                                      Thirsty Lion

In the middle you can see an obelisk surrounded by more figures.

My favorite here is the thirsty lion.

On the right side you can see the Fountain of Neptune created 1574.

This fountain is as beautiful designed as the other two.

I really like the mermaids with tails mermaids - with the tiny tails - and their little playmates.

This one has beautiful rear.

And the spectators are part of the fun - as usual

To be continued
