(Drivebycuriosity) - Ancient Rome ruled once most of the known world. The empire perished long ago, but today´s Rome has still a lot of evidence of the past glory. Between the Colosseum and the Circus Maximus you can see a vast area filled with the ruins of the ancient Rome: The
Forum Romanum (Roman Forum) and the
Palantine Hill. Both places are concentrated into an outdoor museum.
The
Forum Romanum is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum (
wikipedia). The
Palantine Hill, which looks over the Forum and the Circus Maximus, is covered with the ruins of palaces, including the house of Augustus, and temples.
Last Saturday we went to this place, using an admission ticket which we had bought online, which allowed us
to avoid the lines. Being an ambitious amateur photographer I used the
visit to take a lot of pictures.
The construction of the several government buildings and temples happened in an unplanned way and created a labyrinth. Later history took her toll, the area was used as a quarry delivering building material for the rest of Rome, the Catholic Church erected some chapels there and the family of some cardinals build a baroque villa into it, including a design garden. Today the area is a mess of more or less preserved ruins, but still impressive and worth the visit.
