Heavy Metal: Behemoth & Wolves In The Throne Room @ Playstation Theater New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - I am a connoisseur of heavy metal. I really enjoy atmospheric rock music with very heavy riffs. Fortunately my wife shares this taste. Yesterday we went to Playstation Theater in Midtown Manhattan to enjoy the performances of 3 bands.

The show opened with Wolves in the Throne Room. This was the fourth gig we saw by them - including twice @ Psycho Las Vegas. Their performance was beautiful & wild again. The stage was kept in very low light and the band  created intense & hypnotizing atmospheric passages which suddenly turned into fierce explosions. Massive base riffs culminated into annihilating assaults shaking the hall. The tsunamis of the sound got intensified by the roars of the two vocalists. It looked like the "Wolves" attacked the civilization and ripped it apart. Unfortunately their show last just about 30 minutes.

After them followed At the Gates, a metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. They played about 50 minutes in the style of Slayer with fast riffs, too fast & too monotonous for my taste, and the high-pitched voice of their front man didn´t impress me either, but they had a lot of fans their.

Behemoth, a death metal band form Gdańsk, Poland (formed 1991), was the top act of the evening and played  about 90 minutes. I loved their show - it was heavy & psychedelic and displayed the experience of 3 decades. In the begin the stage was hidden behind a translucent curtain and the hall was kept in dark. Then slow atmospheric music started and flashing lights illuminated the band members, creating large shadows on the curtain, which created a spooky and sinister atmosphere, like demons celebrating a vicious cult.  Then the curtain dropped and Behemoth confronted the audience with sheer power. Their concert was majestic, but also melodic & virtuous. Light show, costumes and sound created a very special & heavy impression.

I want to see more by them - and from the Wolves too.
