Science Fiction: Permafrost By Alastair Reynolds

(Drivebycuriosity) - Are time travels possible?  They could cause paradoxes. For instance if you travel back in time and kill your father in the cradle you would not exist. But the topic has inspired science fiction authors over more than 100 years. Recently they got support - from science. Physicists claim that they could send some nuclear particles back in time - at least for a tiny fraction of a second (physicsworld  ). Alastair Reynolds, an acclaimed author and one of my favorite scifi writers, uses quantum physics as basis idea for his time travel novel "Permafrost" - a novelty for me (amazon).

The plot is set in northern Russia. Around the year 2090 humankind approaches extinction because of an ecological catastrophe. A group of scientists tries to fight the disaster. They send tiny fractions of matter 70 years back into time using quantum mechanical effects, but they need human cooperation. Valentina, a 71 years old teacher, travels back into time because her mother had developed the mathematical foundation for this project.

The book has a sharp start and develops like a Russian Raymond Chandler story with bizarre & paradox episodes which kept me on the edge. "Permafrost" is one of the best time travel fictions I know.
