Culture: Surprising & Provoking @ Barcelona Museum Of Contemporary Art NSFW

(Drivebycuriosity) - When I am visiting a big city I try to see her museum of modern or contemporary art. These places usually try to surprise & provoke their visitors.

Barcelona`s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) is no exception (macba). According to American standards some of their displays are NSFW but as I was there the museum was filled with school classes, so what?

Especially the current exhibition "The Beast and the Sovereign", organized in cooperation with the German institution Württembergischer Kunstverein (WKV) Stuttgart, gets a lot of attention. Accoding to the Art Newspaper the museum`s director had stepped down because of a controversion caused by the sculpture you can see at the top of this post. It shows a threesome including the former Spanish king Juan Carlos and the late Bolivian activist Domitila Barrios de Chúngara.

Above this paragraph you also can seen the painting "Family" by the Austrian artist Hans Scheirl. Below an image which is part of a collection which deals with a very popular Latin American female saint.

The image above is called "Nina Hagen" by Antonio Beneyto, which refers to a very unorthodox German rock singer.

Above this paragraph the pictures of some kind of pop-up books which I saw on one of the walls.

The image above belongs to an exhibition called "Art & Language".

                                                                 Teatro Proletario

Part of the provocation is an exhibiton with works by Osvaldo Lamborghini, called Teatro Proletario de Cámara, that includes collages with expressionist drawings and images recycled from pornographic publications of the time.

Part of the fun is the building itself (in the same as  New York´s Guggenheim) created by the American architect Richard Meier.

Enjoy.
