Books: Why Frédéric Dard`s Bird In A Cage Is So Much Fun

(Drivebycuriosity) - A man meets a woman. He walks her home, she invites him in. Soon he is confronted with a surprise, many more will follow (this is a spoiler free blog). "Fredéric Dard`s "Bird in Cage" is crime noir in a class of its own
( amazon).

The plot, set in Paris around Christmas Eve in the 1960s, is told in first person. Dard constructed the plot like an illusionist who leads his audience astray with an meticulous constructed but spectacular trick. Even though the tale is heavily elaborated the plot is still somewhat plausible. I had a lot of fun and I was thrilled.

"Bird" is a perfect mixture of thrill & romance sprinkled with subtle erotics. When I read the story a second time, knowing and finally understanding the basic trick and other twists, I had even more fun.

I bought this book because I had enjoyed Dard´s "The Executioner Weeps", another gem (my  review ). I plan to read more by Dard.

Contemporary Art: Agata Slowak @ Fortnight Institute New York - NSFW

(Drivebycuriosity) - Artists aren`t prudish and they often like to provoke. You certainly can say that from a show at Fortnight Institute in Manhattan`s East Village. Certainly NSFW.

The images below challenge the limits of art but being a connoisseur of contemporary art & reporter of the gallery scene in my neighborhood I have to display these images anyway.

                       Phallic Feminism

The art dealer displays paintings by Polish artist Agata Slowak (fortnight  mutualart). The show is called "Time is Love". The press release calls it "refreshing take on phallic feminism", whatever that may mean ( exhibitions).

On top of this post you can see "Swansong" followed by "Joanna with the Pig"; "You were cold in my shadow"; "Situation with Polar Bear & Fox" & "Sperm flooded the Brain". Maybe that explains her paintings.

She`s really on the kinky side: "Penis Constellation"; "From the Cycle, White Balls on the Wall"; "Self-portrait with Sperm and Blood Crossing"

Maybe good Agata wants just to make some fast cash.

Economics: Inflation - Does Money Really Not Matter?

(Drivebycuriosity) - Inflation is collapsing. The inflation rate slid from 9.1% in June 2022 to 4.9% (statista ). This is a drop of 4.2 percentage points and almost halfway to the Federal Reserve´s inflation target of 2%.

But the Fed ignores the progress on the inflation front. Her officials insist on the doctrine that inflation is still too high and might need further interest rate hikes. The ignorance is hair raising.

The high inflation rate has been caused by a flood of money in the past. In 2020 & 2021 the US government flooded the economy with stimulus checks in the value of trillions of dollars (American Rescue Plan), supported by huge bond purchases by the Federal Reserve.

The government money landed directly on the bank accounts of the Americans, blowing up the money volume M2 (bank notes & coins & deposits at banks).

Over two years the US money volume M2 jumped about 40% as a result (the charts by the Federal Reserve of St. Louis display a huge hunchback  fred.stlouisfed). The money deluge met a constraint supply of goods & services, partly because of Covid19. It is no surprise that prices had to increase so much (marginalrevolution).

(source )

But monetary growth had already peaked in February 2021 (with plus 27%). Since then the monetary growth rates have been falling and turned negative in December 2022.

In the recent months the money volume has been shrinking! "We have never seen money taken out of the economy like this in our history" ( twitter.com).

                     Causal Connection

The causal connection between money and inflation is known since the 16th century at least. Nicolaus Copernicus described already in the year 1522 how "too much money" causes inflation. Copernicus` "quantity theory of money" is based on observations:

The Spaniards had conquered today`s Latin America and looted the silver stocks. They send the precious metal to Europe where is was printed into coins and used as money. As a result the European money volume jumped, meeting a restrained supply of goods (agriculture, hand works) &  services. The flood of money raised suddenly the demand for scarce goods & services and caused a jump of the price level.

Elaborated studies by Milton Friedman, Karl Brunner, Allan Meltzer and many other economists (known as Monetarists) described already in the 1960s how and why the inflation rate follows the growth rate of money with a time lag (causal connection).

                The Pull Of Money

It might be helpful to recall Calculus. The inflation rate is the change of the price level: First Derivative. The change of the inflation rate is the Second Derivative

Since inflation follows the growth of money, the inflation rate (growth rate of prices) will follow the pull of the shrinking money volume and the inflation rate will continue to drop.

Unfortunately the Federal Reserve and pundits like former chairman Ben Bernanke & Olivier Blanchard  ignore the facts and declare "Money doesn´t matter" (wsj ). They insist on the doctrine that inflation depends on the labor market and on expectations ( fisher).

As a result the Fed stubbornly dismisses the shrinking money volume. The Fed`s policy is based on ignorance of history and economic illiteracy.

Contemporary Art: Rosa Loy`s Herbarium @ Lyles & King New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - Gentrification never sleeps. New York`s art scene is moving & developing all the time. The art galleries are now discovering Manhattan´s Chinatown. Suddenly new art places pop up in before neglected areas. These places are not quite as big as the Chelsea stalwarts, but often I spot exquisite shows there.

Lyles & King on Catherine & Henry Street has frequently interesting shows, often two side-by-side. I already reported about some of them  (here here here  ). The art dealer has a new exhibition with the lovely paintings by German painter Rose Loy. The show is called "Herbarium" ( lylesandking).

The press release explains "a herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimen, pressed and dried between layers of card or paper" ( herbarium). Her work is inspired by classic fairy tales, often from Eastern Europe.

I love all these images. On top of this post you can see "Herbarium" (2023, casein on canvas, 51 1/8 x 43 1/4 inches, 130 x 110 cm) Casein is the dominant protein in milk - and of course in cheese. The image is followed by "Stay or Go (Bleiben oder Gehen)" & "Care (Sorgfalt)". Above the next paragraphs follow "Movie (Lichtspiel)"; "Old Stories (Alte Geschichten")";Vegative" (Vegativ)". "Served" (Aufgetischt)" & "Reinforcement (Verstärkung).

Twilight In The Garden Of Hope

Above this paragraph you can see: "Headquarters (Zentrale)"; "Departure (Aufbruch)"; "Old into New (Altes in Neues)" & "Builders (Erbauerinnen)".

Outdoors is another show, called "Twilight in the Garden of Hope", a monumental sculptural installation by New York-based artist Katherin Ruttenberg.

Books: April In Spain By John Banville

(Drivebycuriosity) - I like crime mysteries with an atmospheric literary style. So I enjoyed the Quirke series by Benjamin Black, a pseudonym for award crowned Irish author John Banville.

The novels are mostly set in Ireland in the 1950s. Quirke, a pathologist, who works in a morgue, is a twisted and very curious man who develops interest in cases which are not really his business. When he believes that something is not right he starts a personal investigation, whatever it may cost him. The series has more standard characters, including Quirke`s daughter Penelope, who is as twisted & complicated as her father.

Book 8 of the series, named "April in Spain", is published under the real author´s name Banville ( amazon). This change signals a significant change of the concept. "April" is not a mystery anymore, instead it is a kind of Greek drama, where actions start a chain of events, leading to a tragedy. The law of unintended sinister consequences.

Quirke makes holidays in San Sebastian together with his new wife, an Austrian psychologist. By chance Quirke spots a young woman, Irish by her accent, who seems to be familiar to him - and being Quirke he gets curious..........  (this is a spoiler free blog).

I am no fan of Greek tragedies and I dislike like some of the characters and their behavior, which is stupid, irresponsible and worse. But I still enjoyed Banville´s elaborate style and his descriptions of situations & places, which create a dark atmosphere.

But anyway, the author wrote much better books. My favorites are "Snow" (my review  ), "Wolf on a String" ( review) and "Christine Falls", the start of the Quirke series ( review).

Stock Market: A Tale Of 2 Tailwinds

(Drivebycuriosity) - The US stock market is on a tear again. The SP 500, the gauge for the US stock market, gained 9% year-to-date, the technology biased Nasdaq climbed even 21%.

The rally is driven by 2 tailwinds:

 (source )

1. Inflation rates are dropping - creating hope for falling interest rates in the coming months. High inflation & rising interest rates had caused last year´s bear market.

But inflation peaked already June 2022 with 9.1% and dropped to 4.9%. The high inflation has been caused by a flood of money in the past. In 2020 & 2021 the US government flooded the economy with stimulus checks in the value of trillions of dollars (American Rescue Plan), supported by huge bond purchases by the Federal Reserve.

Since inflation follows the growth of money, the inflation rate (growth rate of prices) will follow the pull of the shrinking money volume and the inflation rate will continue to drop.

I expect that the inflation rate - which already dropped 4.2 percentage points -  will drop to 2% - the target of the Federal Reserve - and the interest rates will follow and stimulate the stock market further.

 Foundation For A Significant Acceleration

2. The secondtail wind is generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Microsoft, Google, Amazon and other technology companies are developing and training large language models such as ChatGPT, “which are vast systems based on deep neural networks that have been trained on massive amounts of data and can then be adapted to perform a wide range of different tasks" (brookings ).

These software systems will not only foster revenues & profits of the leading AI corporations. A Brooking study claims that "large language models such as ChatGPT are emerging as powerful tools that not only make workers more productive but also increase the rate of innovation, laying the foundation for a significant acceleration in economic growth" ( brookings).

Baidu, the leading Chinese search engine, declared recently that their AI system will "power agricultural enterprises to promote innovation and to optimize energy use, resource allocation, and waste reduction, and to improve disease diagnosis in health care industry, therefore, enhancing people's well-being and the quality of life" (seekingalpha ).

              Accelerating Progress

Both tailwinds should continue in the coming months - and might even get stronger. When inflation continues the way south, following the pull of the shrinking money volume, and is getting closer to 2% - the skeptics will get silenced and the markets will get more optimistic. The rapid progress of AI - which seems to accelerate - should raise company revenues & profits in the coming quarters significantly, fueling further stock market gains.

Enjoy!
