(Drivebycuriosity) - Gentrification never sleeps. New York`s art scene is moving & developing all the time. The art galleries are now discovering Manhattan´s Chinatown. Suddenly new art places pop up in before neglected areas. These places are not quite as big as the Chelsea stalwarts, but often I spot exquisite shows there.
Lyles & King on Catherine & Henry Street has frequently interesting shows, often two side-by-side. I already reported about some of them (here here here ). The art dealer has a new exhibition with the lovely paintings by German painter Rose Loy. The show is called "Herbarium" ( lylesandking).
The press release explains "a herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimen, pressed and dried between layers of card or paper" ( herbarium). Her work is inspired by classic fairy tales, often from Eastern Europe.
I love all these images. On top of this post you can see "Herbarium" (2023, casein on canvas, 51 1/8 x 43 1/4 inches, 130 x 110 cm) Casein is the dominant protein in milk - and of course in cheese. The image is followed by "Stay or Go (Bleiben oder Gehen)" & "Care (Sorgfalt)". Above the next paragraphs follow "Movie (Lichtspiel)"; "Old Stories (Alte Geschichten")";Vegative" (Vegativ)". "Served" (Aufgetischt)" & "Reinforcement (Verstärkung).
Twilight In The Garden Of Hope
Above this paragraph you can see: "Headquarters (Zentrale)"; "Departure (Aufbruch)"; "Old into New (Altes in Neues)" & "Builders (Erbauerinnen)".
Outdoors is another show, called "Twilight in the Garden of Hope", a monumental sculptural installation by New York-based artist Katherin Ruttenberg.
To be continued
