Art Market: Tidbits From Spring Auctions 2023 @ Christie`s New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - It´s auction season again. This week the global auction houses start their spring auctions in New York City. As usual my wife and I went their to see their huge galleries.

We began with Christie´s in Manhattan´s midtown. They had galleries for their Marquee Week, separated in 21st Century Sale, the 20th Century Evening Sale and the Post War & Contemporary Art Day Sale plus some amazing collections (christies).

They also displayed an impressive amount of impressionists, modern art works and some surreal paintings.

Above this paragraph you can see the wonderful expressionist "Michael and Maya" by Doron Langberg (2016, oil on canvas).

Above another favorite of mine: "Set List Focus" by Jenna Gribbon (2020, oil on canvas). Reminds me of amazing concerts by SubRosa and other bands.

                            Eye Opener

Meet the "Ice Queen" by Robin F. Williams (2019, oil and acrylic on canvas). The piece will start Christie`s 21st Century Evening Sale, they call it "a conversation starter christies )

Above you can see "Julien Nguyen`s "Kill Bill: Volume 3" (2017, oil and tempera on aluminum panel) & Emma Webster´s "Glen" (oil on linen).

I really like to go to auction houses because there are always some really funny things to see. What did Salman Toor think when he created the "Happy Servant"? Images like this belong to the reasons why I really love contemporary art. But I love Caravaggio, Renoir and other classic masters as well.

                  Venus Of Lower East Side

Above are Wang Yuang´s "The Moon 20190618" followed by Christa Banban`s "The Venus of the Lower East Side"; Ivy Haldeman`s "Full Figure, Head rests on Back of Hand, Knees Akimbo, Thumb Inside Book" & John Currin`s "Untitled".

Above you see Jonathan Lyndon Chase`s "Pretty Dark Song" followed by Katsua Funakoshi`s sculpture with the surprising title "Map of Water" (painted camphor wood & marble christies ) & Miriam Cahn`s "Was mich anschaut" (what looks at me).

I love Mark Tansey`s surreal compositions. This piece is called "Archive".

Yes, that is Francis Bacon`s "Self-Portrait". Isn`t he beautiful

              The Beautiful & The Damned

The ubiquitous Jeff Koons participates with his "Gazing Ball (Velázquez Infanta Maria Teresa)"

Above one of Cecily Brown`s almost abstract orgies: "Untitled (The Beautiful and the Damned)" & a detail shot. Lust on canvas.

No auction without Gerhard Richter. Above his "Spoleto" followed by "Badende".

Maybe Georg Baselitz was a bat in a former life. He really likes to paint people up-side down, though a "Baselitz" can easily be recognized. This one is "Man mit Tablett". Yes, Baselitz is German.

        Impressionists, Surrealists & More

Henri Rousseau`s "Les Flamants" belongs to the filet piece of their Impressionists auction (Estimate
$ 20,000,000 – 30,000,000)

I also love Eugene Berman`s wild "Perpetuum immobile", part of their Impressionist & Modern Art sale.

Above follow Kees van Dongen`s "Portrait de jeune femme (Boby)"; Joan Miró´s "Figure" (bronze, before a Matta painting); Salvador Dali`s (very untypical) "Orlando" & Jean Metzinger´s "Cariatide".

No auction without nudes. Above: Edouard Villard´s "Nu étendu sur un canapé"; Moise Kisling´s "Nu allongé" & Suzanne Valladon`s "Nu aux bas bleus".

To be continued
