Art Market: Tidbits From Spring Auctions 2023 @ Sotheby`s New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - It´s auction season again. The global auction houses have their huge spring auctions in New York City. As usual my wife and I went their to see their huge galleries. After Christie´s (my report ) we went to Sotheby´s ( sothebys).

As in the years before they amassed a huge amount of art works and I can show here some tidbits - a very selective collection as usual

I love Mark Tansey`s surrealist compositions. Above you can see his "Study for action Painting II" (1985, oil on canvas).

Louise Bourgeois´ majestic "Spider" (bronze, 133 by 263 by 249 in.) takes the breath of the visitors.

                      Creepy Dinnertime

Above follow Guy Yanai`s "Interior with a Hockney Poster"; Doron Langberg`s "Mom weaving" & Shannon Cartier Lucky´s creepy macabre  "Dinnertime (Self-Portrait)". He website shannonlucy  offers more macabre images.

Above follow John Currin`s "Sherrie Sellers"; Alex Katz`s "Ace Airport"; Wayne Thiebaud´s "Sacramento" & Miriam Cahn`s "Gebet, 30.11 + 1.12.03". The last painting means "Prayer", I have no idea what the dates mean.

Anselm Kiefer owns a category for himself. Above the master`s "Urd, Werdandi, Skuld" (2004,
oil, emulsion, shell owns a category for himself. Above the master´s "Urd, Werdandi, Skuld" (oil, emulsion, shellac, lead, wire, clay dust and oil stick on canvas).

                             Great Minds

Above Francis Bacon`s "Head of a Woman" & Karel Appel`s "Personage". Great Minds think alike

I think bizarre paintings are the spice of art. Above some of them:

Roberto Fabelo`s "Bacanal". The detail shot shows that they look really exhausted. Fun costs energy.

After that follows another "Bacanal", this time by Bejamin Canas. It my be not a coincidence, because both pieces are part of "Vanguard Spirits" and may have belonged to the same collection. The detail shot reveals that big man has huge muscles, but not everything is so impressive.

Pedro Pablo Obliva`s "El Gran Artista Y Sus Modelos" belongs somewhat into this exquisite group.

Above Nicaraguan artist Armando Morales` "Dos Figuras" (1970, oil, beeswax and pastel on canvas with canvas collage). Yes, Beeswax!

Above Simone Leigh´s "Las Meninas II" (terracotta, steel, raffia and porcelain) followed by Nicole Eisenmann`s "Night Studio" & Tom Wesselmann`s "Monica, Arms on Knees" (enamel on laser-cut steel).

                      Impressionists & More

Even though I love contemporary art some of the old masters have my heart as well. I am really a fan of Pierre-August Renoirs.

Above some lovely ladies: "Jeun Fille Au Chapeau "De Paille" has the face of a child but the body of woman. Dangerous. "Buste De Jeune Fille" attracts me as well.

Above another god of art: René Magritte. The auction is blessed with2 of his most famous works, belonging to the Mo Ostin Collection. I am so glad that I can see "L ´Empire Des Lumieres" & "Le Domaine D`Arnheim".

The wonderful show had as usual many pieces by the extremely productive & prolific Pablo Picasso. Here just 2 of his countless gems: "Feme Nue Couchée Jouant Avec Un Chat" & "Paysage".

Birge Harrison`s atmospheric "Grand and the Biltmore in Hazy Twilight" also caught my eyes.

Above follows Mario Carreno`s "Estudio Para Fresco

Above 3 beauties: "Young Model" by William Langson Lathrop; "Maternidad" by Héctor Poleo & "Mujer De Bali" by Miguel Covarrubias.

A jump back in time: "The virgin and child, with the infant St John the Baptist, St Francis and St Catherine of Siena" by Domenico Beccafumi (Siena 1484-1551).
