Contemporary Art: Fall Auctions 2018 - A Visit @ Sotheby`s, New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - It´s auction season again. This week the global auction houses are performing their huge fall auctions in New York City. My wife and I went to Sotheby´s on New York`s Upper East Side, one of the huge global auction houses (sothebys).

They have on 8 floors exhibitions for the upcoming auctions, including impressionists & modern art. These galleries can easily compete with the collections of big museums like New York´s MoMa - and the entry is free! We focused on the exhibitions for the day & evening auctions of Post War & Contemporary Art (with about 400 lots). I spotted there many of my favorites, but also discovered some new & fascinating artists. I display here just my favorites from the shows, a very subjective selection as usual.

I was glad to discover some paintings by Gerhard Richter. The German painter belongs still to the superstars of the art market. These images show why. Above his masterpiece "Abstraktes Bild" (1987, oil on canvas) and 2 detail shots. The painting was auctioned for $32 million.

Jean Michael Basquiat already sits on the Olympus of the art world. Above "Taxi 45th/Broadway" - a cooperation with Andy Warhol -  (Estimate   6,000,000 — 8,000,000 USD; Lot Sold  9,443,900 USD) followed by "Untitled" (Pollo Fritto)"( Lot Sold  25,701,500 USD ) & MASQUE "Masque" (Estimate   3,000,000 — 4,000,000, Lot Sold   4,635,000).

I am fascinated by Willem de Kooning`s abstract compositions:"Untitled X"
followed by "Amityville" (Estimate   10,000,000 — 15,000,000 Lot Sold   11,589,000) & "Untitled X" (Estimate   7,000,000 — 10,000,000; Lot Sold   8,314,900 USD).

and by Helen Frankenthaler´s images as well. Above her "Tobago" (Estimate   600,000800,000).

Peter Doig belongs to the rising stars in the art world. His "House of pictures" was sold for $9,1 million.

                                                      Trinker Am Tisch

I am a fan of Georg Baselitz`s absurd paintings as well. Here my report from his show @ Gagosioan in 2016 (driveby). Above "Trinker am Tisch (Drinker at the Table) ( Estimate   3,000,000 — 5,000,000 Lot Sold   5,040,800) followed by "Der Jäger (The Hunter)" ( Estimate   1,800,000 — 2,500,000, Lot Sold   3,615,000 USD).

The art by Damien Hirst might be controverse. But his images are entertaining at least. Above his "Beautiful Branwen Paraphrenia Intense Painting (With extra inner beauty)" (household gloss on canvas, Estimate   80,000 — 120,000 USD).

There are not many females in this business. But there is at least one woman who`s star is rising:  Cecily Brown. Last year I reported about her show @ Paula Cooper Gallery New York  ( driveby). Above her"Untitled" (Estimate   50,000 — 70,000 USD) & "Hangover Square"  (Estimate   400,000 — 600,000)

I also love Jacqueline Humphries wonderful abstract painting "Untitled" (Estimate   35,000 — 45,000 USD)

The American expressionist Wayne Thiebaud`s  paintings seem to belong to every auction as well. Above "Nude"  (Estimate   1,500,000 — 2,000,000; Lot Sold   2,655,000 USD) followed by "Night Cloud" (Estimate   300,000 — 400,000 USD) & "Desert Cloud" (Estimate   250,000 — 350,000 USD).
