(Drivebycuriosity) - Finally, the summer has started. In New York City also began the season for open air rock concerts. And some of them are for free!
The most anticipated event - at least in my mind - is the "4Knots Festival" at South Street Seaport on June 29 (villagevoice). The free open air rock concert is organized and sponsored by the "Village Voice". They are continuing a tradition of annually rock events that started on Coney Island, the "Siren Festival".
This year they announce 8 bands (2 stages) including "Kurt Vile and the Violators" (4knots). I have attended some of the former events and experienced good music then. Hence I expect a lot of strong rock music and I`m looking forward to it.
If you like it more rough you could go to "Punk Island" on Staten Island at June 22 (punkislandnyc.org). This is a free open air event with a lot of groups playing on 7 stages (!). Last year´s event, then held on Governor´s Island, was a lot of fun in the sun. Unfortunately they changed the schedule from sunday to saturday and are competing now with the Mermaid parade on Coney Island which is on the same day.
If you want to spend some money you could attend "Governors Ball" on Randall´s Island this weekend (randallsisland). The huge festival has illustrious names like "Kings of Leon" and "Guns and Roses".
And there is more. Brooklyn has the "Northside Festival (June 13-20) with 350 bands (!) including "Black Flag" (northsidefestival.com).
Enjoy.
