Contemporary Art: Fall Auctions 2016 - A Visit @ Phillips, New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - It´s auction season again. Next week the global auction houses will have their huge fall auctions in New York City. So my wife and I went to Phillips on 450 Park Avenue (phillips),  the No. 3 of the global auction empires.

The company has the reputation to be more focused on contemporary works than her bigger competitors and to show more cutting edge art. I am grateful that they allow humble spectators like us to visit and enjoy all the precious displays. And they didn`t mind that I took a lot pictures there to get my personal collection.

I display here my favorites from the exhibition - as usual a very subjective selection. Above this paragraph you can see a painting by Gerhard Richter, one of the super stars of contemporary art. The work is called "Dϋsenjäger'" (jet fighter). The auction house estimates a price of $25,000,000 - 35,000,000. According to Bloomberg the owner, the billionaire Paul Allen,  a co-founder with Bill Gates of Microsoft, hopes to triple his investment of 11.2 million ( bloomberg). The work is part of a group of Richter’s eight early photo-based paintings that depict World War II-era aircraft, some with bombs in free-fall.

Above an icon of pop art: Roy Lichtenstein`s "Nudes in Mirror" (oil and Magna on canvas). There is no price range. Estimate On Request says the auction house.

Above another German: Sigmar Polke`s "Untitled", Estimate $35,000 - 45,00. followed by Clyfford Still`s "Untitled", Estimate $12,000,000 - 18,000,000 & Kazuo Shiraga´s "T40" Estimate $1,200,000 - 1,800,000.

The dancing sculpture above is called "dying slave". Artistic freedom! Anyway the creator is Sui Jianguo, Estimate $50,000 - 70,000.

The colorful work above reminds me of Disney movies.
Jamian Juliano-Villan`s "The Man from Bozrah", Estimate $25,000 - 35,000.

I like the painting by Cheyney Thompson named "1998 (CT-0318)", Estimate $12,000 - 18,000. The wood on the painting looks like real wood, I almost could smell it.

They have also one Koons of course: Jeff Koons´ "Dom Pérignon Balloon Venus (Magenta)", Estimate $25,000 - 35,000, almost a bargain.

Jack Goldstein`s "Untitled" Estimate $120,000 - 180,000  followed by Kara Walker`s "Untitled" Estimate $200,000 - 300,000.

I enjoy the elegant work by Wade Guyton. "Untitled" Estimate $1,200,000 - 1,500,000.

To be continued.
