Movies: Damsel

(Drivebycuriosity) - Everything is changing, even western are getting more and more modern, or is post-modern? The movie "Damsel" is the newest example ( imdb ). The film is a black comedy - and maybe a western persiflage - based on the classical theme "damsel in distress", set in America´s pioneer period. A young man arrives in the wilderness of the US west around the year 1870, accompanied by a cute tiny horse, named Butterscotch. He wants to rescue his fiancee who got "abducted by 2 very evil men and merry her", he claims. His efforts start a chain reaction of surprising & hilarious events (this is a spoiler free blog).

The camera indulged into awesome landscapes found in Utah and Oregon - a combination of beauty & toughness. The set designers recreated pioneer settlements almost as rough as the environment. The scenery was populated by cranky characters, apparently shaped by the brutal nature they had to deal with. I had much fun watching these odd persons, especially Robert Pattinson as the eloquent & stubborn savior and Mia Wasikowska, the damsel, who was a beautiful and tough as the environment.

I found the film funny & entertaining and was mesmerized by the displayed nature.
