Traveling: Visiting Cancun In Times Of Covid

(Drivebycuriosity) - My wife and I are traveling again, Covid or not. We took a Delta Flight from JFK to Cancun, flight time about 4 hours. The flight was uneventful. The pilot emphasized the mask mandate, but some idiots did not get it as usual. Unfortunately the crew did not hand out the obligatory immigration form for Mexico. At airport Benito Juraez we lost time to get the form and stranded on the end of very long lines for the immigration check - the waiting time was about one hour. But the transport to the Hyatt Zilara was fast thanks to Sarah`s arrangement with the hotel.

The Hyartt Zilara is in the hotel zone on a long stripe of land between the ocean in the east and a laguna (lagoon) - before the city. The hotel has as least 7 pools, including one lap pool, which is rarely used. The largest pool - called "infinity pool" - is just below our balcony. At lunch time and afternoon the pool is occupied by party people who enjoy drinks from the swim-up bar at the pool, looking like turtles. But in the morning & evening hours we have the unheated pool for ourselves thanks to the chilly air & water temperatures.

The North American continent suffers from the jet stream which cools most of the US and their neighborhood. Cancun is untropically chilly and we had just 63 F/17 C on Sunday morning at 8.30 pm. Afternoon was also fresh thanks to the northern wind.

Because of Covid we needed a negative test to get on our return flight. On Saturday we made an appointment for the test on Monday 4 pm. Hotel staff was very cooperative and helped us to fill the form for the appointment. We got the result already around 8.20 pm per email. Fortunately we were tested NEGATIVE  - HOORAY

Food is all inclusive in the hotel, but the restaurants are mixed. I love the breakfast buffet and on Saturday we had fixed menu dinner on "the chef table". Just 8 persons (4 couples) sat on a long table. On Monday night we had dinner in an Asian style restaurant where Mexican cooks celebrated a Japanese cooking show. There is also a restaurant with advertised Mexican cuisine - but food is boring and tasteless.

There is a very long sandy public beach where we can walk as long as we like. The sand is very soft and white with a bit caramel. The ocean looks like a Rothko painting: azure, turquoise and other shades are mixing with the white from the modest surf. On Tuesday - our return flight day - at 7.23 am we watched the sun rising from beyond the ocean, suddenly a fierce torch appeared.
