(Drivebycuriosity) - Alan Turing was a mathematical genius. The movie "The Imitation Game" (imdb) focuses on Turing`s role in cracking "Enigma", the code of the German enemy in WWII, an action which might have shortened the war (this is a spoiler free blog. You can find a synopsis here wikipedia).
"Imitation Game" is the second film about decrypting the Enigma code I have watched. While the movie "Enigma" from 2001 was a psychological thriller and a stylish detective story (imdb), this film centers on Turing`s struggles. Director Morten Tyldum, script writer Graham Moore and author Andrew Hodges, who wrote the book, tell how Turing and his team members were obstructed by an ignorant and stubborn bureaucracy and an ungrateful British government.
Benedict Cumberbatch showed again why he is a rising star on the cinematic firmament. He played convincingly how the cool but anti-social scientist Turing was at odds with an unkind public. Matthew Gode, Mark Strong and others complemented his performance in a compelling way. Unfortunately the delicious Keira Knightley was a bit underemployed and didn´t have the chance to display her talents fully.
Anyway - the "Imitation Game" is an entertaining and fascinating biopic and historical document.
