(Drivebycuriosity) - Claire, a married woman in her 20s, has to deal with the death of Laura, heir intimate friend since childhood. She is supporting David, the widower, and Laura´s baby as she had promised to Laura. The French movie "The New Girlfriend/Une nouvelle amie" (imdb) describes the complications and confusion caused by this promise (this blog tries to be spoiler free).
Director François Ozon ("In the House"; "Swimming Pool") delivered a kind of melancholic comedy about people who are getting confronted by their own sexuality. The film touches in a playful way issues like friendship, gender identity. There are similarities to films like "Farewell My Concubine", the movies by Pedro Almodóvar and the Amazon series "Transparent" but "Girlfriend" is much more subtle sand filigree. The film is sometimes funny and hilarious, but also gives something to think about. Cinematographer Pascal Marti created fitting color compositions.
Romain Duris conviced as the widower, who wants to find a new self, congenial supported by the delicate Anaïs Demoustier, who flies through the plot like a butterfly.
"The New Girlfriend" shows that French Cinema still can entertain and deal with contemporary topics as well.
