Contemporary Art: Tom Wesselman`s Standing Still Lifes @ Gagosian New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - Tom Wesselmann belonged to the most important artists of our time. The American artist(1931-2004) and had a strong influence on pop art. His nudes are famous but he also created different works as you can see here.

Now Gagosian, a global art trader empire, has now a exhibition called “Tom Wesselmann: Standing Still Lifes” ( 555 West 24th Street New York gagosian ). They show monumental works made between 1967 and 1981. Each large-scale work comprises multiple canvases, both hanging and standing, shaped according to the outline of the commonplace objects that they depict (press release). I display here my favorites from the show, a very subjective selection as usual.

On top of this post you can see "Still Life #60" (1973, oil on canvas, in six separate free-standing sections, overall: 122 1/4 × 333 × 86 1/2 inches (310.5 × 845.8 × 219.7 cm).

On top of this paragraph follows "Still Life with Blue Jar and Smoking Cigarette" (1981
Oil on shaped canvases (four separate free-standing sections, 108 × 221 × 66 inches (274.3 × 561.3 × 167.6 cm). Is this really healthy?

I like especially the blue smoke.

Stay tuned.
