Contemporary Art: Passive. Aggression @ GR Gallery New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - Manhattan´s Bowery is a popular street with lots of restaurants & shops which attract myriads of tourist. But there are also ambitious art galleries. GR Gallery just south of Houston Street belongs to them.

The art dealer has an interesting show with paintings by by self-taught American-Korean artist Joseph Lee (.josephleeart ). The exhibition is called: "Passive. Aggression" (gr-gallery ). According to the press release Lee created his works during the Covid19 lockdowns.

I was impressed by the massive brush strokes which seem to be glued to the canvas, resisting gravity. The thickness makes the painting almost 3-dimensional. I tried to capture the effect by accompanying some images here with detail shots.

The press release comments: "At the time of inception, these paintings were the best representations of what words escaped him, to convey – in composition – what he was unable to articulate. They are a line of expression uninterrupted. ‘Passive. Aggression’ is a collection of the artist’s self-reflections, love letters, & apologies translated onto canvas".

I like the intensity of the images above.
