(Drivebycuriosity) - There is much ado about Artificial Intelligence (AI). The doomsters denounce it as the enemy of humankind which could end history. I think this is just hysteria. We need AI - here´s why.
Just some examples: Doctors often make an educated guess what really caused the patient´s complicated symptoms - and they don´t have much time. AI will help them to find a diagnoses by comparing the symptoms globally with millions of similar cases and evaluate possible treatments, including all possible costs & side effects. AI will raise the doctor´s productivity, allow them to treat more patients - and might even save lives.
AI could assist Biotech and pharma companies to create new drugs. The typical drug discovery and development process takes 12 years or more and costs millions (vox ). Often investments have to be written off because the proposed drug fails in clinical tests - the investments are lost.
AI can reduce the risk of failures and reduce time & costs of the development process by assessing billions of data. By looking at the structures of small molecules and predicting their properties AI can accelerate the creation of new vaccines, cancer treatments, Alzheimer prevention methods and making them cheaper.
AI`s capability to process a deluge of information in a fraction of times also supports retailers. They need to guess how consumer demand might change, which products they want and how competitors could respond. Nike for instance bought an AI startup "to help it better understand
consumer demand in real-time so it can have needed inventory in the
right place (fool.com). And Walmart uses AI technologies to help it better manage its inventory ( fool). AI will also give customers (more accurate) recommendations based on past order history and user profile.
AI could help Architects & engineers to calculate how buildings, bridges, tunnels etc. might respond to earth quakes, hurricanes and other stress situations and how to construct them faster & cheaper. AI will help city planners to design settlements & street networks more efficient in order to optimize traffic and the flow of air which will reduce energy costs & accidents.
