The movie "Brooklyn" tells the story of Ellis, an Irish girl in her early twentieth (imdb). In the year 1952 Ellis migrates to New York´s district Brooklyn and starts a new life there, but good old Ireland is still in her mind which leads to...... (this is a spoiler free blog).
I liked the movie, even that I had some problems with the plot, based on the same named novel by Colm Tóibín (explaining this would be a spoiler). I was enthralled by the gorgeous cinematography by Yves Bélanger and his team who illustrated the ship transfer across the ocean and the nostalgic Brooklyn, its shops, streets, fashion and more, like a piece of art.
"Brooklyn" is foremost a Saoirse Ronan film. Her appearance explained why the Irish-American actress is one of the rising stars on Hollywood`s firmament. Her tranquil performance gave the movie some spell. Often the camera lingered on her face and her eyes dominated the screen. Pure magic! The rest of the cast, especially Emory Cohen, also had strong appearances.
I think the Oscar nominations for Best Picture & Best Actress are well deserved. "Brooklyn" is highly recommended.
