Christie`s had quite an attraction, Balthus`famous “Therèse sur une banquette” (1939, oil on board). The delicate painting got sold for $19,002,500, a new World Auction Record for the artist.
Sotheby´s had a crowd pleaser as well: William Bouguereau`s majestic “La Jeunesse de Bacchus” (1984, oil on canvas, 130 3-8 by 240 1-8 in, 331 by 610 cm).
The auction houses had more highlights, including Amedeo Modigliani`s “Lunia Czechowska (à la robe noire)” (1919. Oil on canvas)
Claude Monet`s “Coin du bassin aux nymphéas” (1918-19, oil on canvas) got a lot attention as well.
I love these wonderful paintings: Wifredo Lam`s “Sin titulo (Bano de sol)” (1923) & Eugene Boudin`s “Scène de Plage Á Trouville” (1870).
Salvador Dali `s works are pure magic, above his “Naissance dune divinité” (1960).
The same for René Magritte`s works; above “La Magie Noire” (!946)? & “La Magie Noire” (1946). 1
No modern art auction without Pablo Picasso. Above his elegant “Femme au Chien” & “Jeune Femme au large cou, de face” (1936).
Too Suggestive For Facebook?
What would Zuckerberg say about Georgia O`Keeffe´s “Inside Red Canna” (1919) & “Waterfall, No. 2, Ian Valley” (1939). Are they too suggestive for Facebook?
I guess Zuckerberg might also censor Tamara de Lempicka. Above “La Sagesse” (1940-41) & “Nu assis” (1925).
More food for the censors: Camille Bombois` “Nu dans un intérieur” followed by Jean-Gabriel Domergue`s “Nu allongé”, Henri Manguin`s “Nu À L´Atelier (La Croupe, Rue Boursaul)” (1903). Henri Matisse`s “Nu à la fenetre” & Georges DÈspagnat`s “Le Repos” (1892)? - 1
Is Maximilien Luce`s “La baignade á Bessy-sur-Cure” (1908) a case for the censors?
Above some nice architectural paintings: Gustave Caillebotte`s “La Rue Halévy, Vue du Sixième Étage” (1878) & Bernard Buffet`s “Le Chateau d`Azay-le-Rideau” (1972).
I love the powerful style of these works: Oscar Dominguez`s “Taureau” (1951) & Ricardo Martinez`s “Personaje” (1985)
The German immigrant George Grosz painted a massive “New York Harbor” (1936). Today it´s gone - gentrification.
And there were more Balthus: “Étude Pour “Le Salon”” (1941) plus “Odalisque Alongée” (1998-99)
Enjoy!
