(Drivebycuriosity) - London is a fascinating city which I plan to visit this year. This drew my attention to the novel "Capital" by John Lanchester (amazon). The book is set in the metropolis around the year 2008 and got a lot applause (wikipedia).
Lanchester focuses on Pepys Road, a street in the east of London. The plot jumps in short chapters from character to character and follows persons who live there, work there or are somewhat connected with the residents. There is a currency trader who works for a city bank, a 82 years old woman, a young African footballer, a Muslim family from Pakistan, a Polish plumber, an artist and many more. And in the background something mysterious and disturbing is developing. It`s about careers, families, immigrants, architecture, soccer, and much more.
I cared about some of his characters, but not about all. I enjoyed some of Lanchester´s descriptions, but could without some of his tales. The mysterious background story got an implausible & disappointing solution. Lanchester seems overrated to me.
