Architecture: EUR Rome - The Beauty Of Geometry

(Drivebycuriosity) - My wife and I are back in Rome. We are lodging in EUR, a residential and business district in the south of the metropolis. The area was originally chosen in 1930s as the site for the 1942 world's fair which Benito Mussolini planned to open to celebrate twenty years of Fascism, the letters EUR standing for Esposizione Universale Roma (wikipedia). History and World War II nixed these plans, but the district got realized in the 1950s and was used for the 1960 Olympics in Rome. EUR became a role model for an out-of-town business & residential district (satellite town
) and followed by other big cities.

EUR`s architecture shows a bit the fascist history and the obsession with the Roman Empire, but I like the clear & elegant geometric structures which give the buildings a futuristic approach. The architecture of EUR reminds me of the Bauhaus style  - a piece of art.

Above the Pallazo dei Congressi.

Above the Museo della Civiltà Romana (Museum of Roman Civilization).

Other photographers are apparently also attracted by EUR`s design.

Above the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, also appropriately called Colosseo Quadrato.

Above the Planetario e Museo Astronomico

Above Banca Nazionale Del Lavoro.

Above more examples of EUR`s classical Roman design

Above some details

There interesting and artful designed modern buildings, this is Poste Italiano.

Above the Ministerio for infrastructure & transportation.

More beautiful and modern structures

                                Stranded Spaceship?

EUR gets even more beautiful when the sun is setting

EUR looks in the night like the set of a science fiction movie.

They are till constructing a new congress center, a futuristic glass cube with strange interior which looks in the night like a stranded spaceship.

Aren`t these buildings amazing?

Some restaurants there got inspired by the general design.

Even the subway stations look futuristic.

To be continued.
