Traveling: A Walk Around Vatican City

(Drivebycuriosity) - This Monday my wife and I arrived in Rome. We will explore the external city in the coming weeks. We are staying in a hotel west of the river Tiber in the district Quartiere XIII Aurelio,  a suburban area.

The next day we had a hike around Vatican City. We walked from our hotel via Via Gregorio VII to Vatican City, which needed about 40 minutes. We skipped visiting the St. Peter's Basilica this time because the waiting lines before the security checks were some hundred meters long.

Instead we took a look into the church Santa Maria In Traspontina in the middle of the Vatican city, then we walked through the river Tiber, but we ignored the Castel Sant Angelo (Engelsburg) there and walked north to the district Patri, a residential and office area, designed in the 19th century. There we enjoyed sweets in a cool Pasticceria and had lat dinner before we walked home.

On my way I enjoyed the architecture, we could see  many interesting residential buildings on our way. I liked especially the generous use of yellow and ocker.

We also spotted some nice street cafes. These kiosks seem to be an important part of Rome´s street life.

To be continued.
