Culture A Visit @ Museo Soumaya Mexico City

(Drivebycuriosity) - Mexico City is a cosmopolitan place with a legion of museums, many of them are world class. This Monday my wife and I visited Museo Soumaya (museosoumaya). The place  belongs to the row of Mexico City´s private museums and is owned and founded by the billionaire Carlos Slim. On six floors they show an impressive selection, including old masters and impressionists. I display here my favorites, a very subjective selection as usual.

I was amazed by the wall filling mural "Depature. Austerlitz Station, Paris"  by Paul-Louis Delance (1883). Apparently soldiers are going into war, who will come back?

I also love "Mediterranean Harbor" by Claude-Joseph Vernet (1771).

There are more impressive paintings: "View of  the Royal Alcázar and the Segovia Bridge" by an anonymous artist from Madrid (Anomino madrileno) (ca. 1670)  & Andreas Aschenbach`s "The Ship Wreck"(ca. 1970-1900).

Giorgio de Chirico`s surreal "Autumnal Meditation"

#The Polish-born French painter Moïse Kisling is known by his exquisite female nudes. But above you can see his "Landscape of New York" (1943) followed by "Impression of La Boca" by the Argentinian artist Benito Quinquela Martin.

There were some erotic paintings. Above a small selection: "Lucretia Romana" by Lucas Cranach followed by "Cupid & Psyche" by Trophime Bigot & (1638-42) "Untitled" by the Lebanon born artist Gibran Kahil Gibran.

One floor is reserved for the gorgeous French painter Maurice de Vlaminck (1876 – 1958 wikipedia ). You can see "Moulin on the Sausseron in Valmondois" followed by "The Barracks"; "Landscape"; "Seascape"; "Landscape in Winter" & "Road under the Snow".

The sixth floor focuses on sculptures and impresses also with the architectural design. Above "Rhodopis on Plinth" by Charles Francis Fuller" (1862)  &  "Napoleon inspires Italy and Revives Her Great Destiny" by Camillo Pacetti (106-07).

To be continued
