Modern Art: Carlos Mérida @ Museo Nacional De Arte Mexico City

(Drivebycuriosity) - "Reisen bildet" (traveling educates) says a German proverb. During my visit in Mexico City I learned a lot about Latin American art and discovered many artists I didn`t know. The Museo Nacional de Arte had an exhibition with work by Carlos Mérida (1891 –1985). The Guatemalan artist was one of the first to fuse European modern painting to Latin American themes, especially those related to Guatemala and Mexico.

On top of this post you can see his cubist "Ana dancing (Portrait of Ana Mérida") and above this paragraph his "Three Women".

Above the futurist  "Planetarium" followed by "Pink Squared". Both paintings remind me of Russian Avant-Garde and Kandinsky

                      Man Of Science?

Above his"Self-Portrait". It seems he wanted to show himself as a man of science. His somewhat motherly "Portrait of Gaby" reminds me of German expressionists.

Mérida showed also some humor. Above the funny "Three Women" & "Love runs free".

To be continued
