Traveling: A Trip To The Pyramid Of The Sun Mexico City

(Drivebycuriosity) - No visit of Mexico City without seeing the famous Teotihuacan pyramids: The Pyramid of the Sun and her smaller sister Pyramid of the Moon. Yesterday my wife and I took a bus ride from Mexico City center to the pyramids, about 40 km and an hour, costing just $5. The pyramids were part of the ancient city Teotihuacan. According to Wikipedia "At its zenith, perhaps in the first half of the 1st millennium CE, Teotihuacan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, with a population estimated at 125,000 or more, making it at least the sixth largest city in the world during its epoch (wikipedia).

Above you can see the Pyramide of the Sun, constructed about 200 CE (Pyramid). The pyramid was built on a carefully selected spot, from where it was possible to align it both to the mountain Cerro Gordo to the north and, in perpendicular directions, to sunrises and sunsets on specific dates, recorded by a by a number of architectural orientations in Mesoamerica.

The stairs are very steep, but the pyramids have ropes to make the climbs safer.

Around the pyramids we could see the remains of houses and temples and some murals.
One seems to show a jaguar.

There were also some reliefs.

The bus ride gave me the occasion to take same pics from the sprawl of the 20 million citizens mega-city.

To be continued
