Movies: The Judge

(Drivebycuriosity) - Nobody stands outside the law, even a judge. This is the topic of the movie "The Judge" (imdb). A judge, who has pronounced judgement for more than 30 years, is impeached himself, defended by his son, a top star lawyer.

The film, set in rural America, continues Hollywood`s tradition of strong court dramas. It also deals with family issues,  old age, father and son conflicts, refreshing old antagonism & friendships and other topics. It seems that director David Dobkin, who also directed flicks like "Wedding Crashers" and "Shanghai Knights" (!), wanted to produce something totally new for him.

The story is a bit thin, but I liked the film anyway. "Judge" is certainly not an action movie and caters more the crowd 30 years and over. It is one of those movies which focus on the acting.

Robert Duvall, whom I have been admiring for many years (for instance in "Godfather", "Apocalypse Now"), delivered another strong performance as the indicted judge. Robert Downey Jr., who is known as a kind of comedian, showed that he got more mature and convinced as compassionate son and shrewd attorney.

The always brilliant Billy Bob Thornton impressed this time as a sharp prosecutor. I also enjoyed the supporting acting by Vincent D'Onofrio ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent"). Unfortunately the females were a bit neglected in this production, I would have liked more attention for Vera Farmiga.

"The Judge" is a slightly entertaining and reflective movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
