Contemporary Art: Meditating In the Rothko Room @ MOCA Grand, Los Angeles

(Drivebycuriosity)  - Are you a fan of Mark Rothko? Then you might visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles`s downtown, the Moca Grand (moca). The museum has a room dedicated to the master of abstracts. There are least six paintings by Rothko, no other artists. When I visited the museum last Thursday afternoon this room was empty - an invitation to meditate on the "Rothkos".

Above one of my favorite "Rothkos", his "No. 301 (Reds and Violet over Red/Red and Blue over Red) [Red and Blue over Red" from 1959 (with details). The artist wanted the viewers to go very close to his paintings to immerse in his work. Looking on the intense colors has a psychedelic effect.

Above Rothko`s "No. 61 (Rust and Blue) [Brown Blue, Brown on Blue]" from 1953.

Above another iconic painting: Jackson Pollock`s "Number 1, 1949" from 1949). The artist made "Number 1, 1949-2 by pouring paint from cans and flinging it from the tips of stocks and brushes over an unstretched canvas lying on the studio floor. Last week was a conservator working on it as you can see,

There are more fascinating paintings of course. Above a small selection: "Monitor" by Franz Kline followed by "Nanda Devi #2" by Joan Brown &  "Self-Made" by Joan Semmel.
