Photography: Las Vegas - Playing With Emptiness

(Drivebycuriosity) - My wife and I are back in Las Vegas. We have visited the desert town in 2012 and last year. We don´t gamble, because we are ware that the odds are against gamblers. Casinos make a lot of money with cards games, one armed bandits and others gambles. All operators of gambling earn more than 50%, so the gamblers in general lose. No wonder that the Americans give their natives, called Indians, the right to own casinos as consolation for taking away their land.

But anyway I enjoy Las Vegas. The city is generously spread over a vast desert valley between Nevada`s mountains. This is a sharp contrast to the little town in Germany where I grew up, which is densely populated and green, and to New York City where I live now. Being an retired economist I am impressed that the founders & developers put a large city into an empty space where land is ample & cheap - playing with emptiness. And I am fascinated with a place which is just there for entertainment.

I really indulge into the desert ambience and the light which is flooding everything there. Being an ambitious amateur photographer I took a lot pictures and display here my favorite shots from the this visit so far.

Even in a desert there can be rain. Early in the afternoon I spotted massive towers of clouds which lead later to a downpour somewhere.

The city has cool skyscrapers & classy interiors, but shabby shops as well

and their are examples of typical American cuisine.

To be continued.
