Science Fiction: Ball Lightning By Liu Cixin

(Drivebycuriosity) - Quantum physics describes the strange behavior of electrons, protons & other atomic particles. What if these quantum mechanic phenomena also would exist in our world and could be observed with our eyes and influence our lives?  Liu Cixin `s novel "Ball Lightning" plays with these ideas and juggles with the laws of physics and quantum mechanic phenomena, a fascinating read (amazon).

Cixin is the author of the famed "Three Body Problem" trilogy. In "Ball Lightning" he toys again with physics and mathematics and translates quantum physics, string theory and more science into speculative & fascinating fiction. The plot - set in contemporary China - is told in first person by Chen who is obsessed with ball lightning thanks to an event in his youth (this is a spoiler free blog). His obsession with this strange phenomena pulls him deep into the mysteries of quantum physics & their spooky effects and leads to bizarre & dramatic results.

The novel is hard science fiction and blends advanced physics & logic with military elements and philosophical speculation about the basis of our world. As in "Three Body" the plot reaches grand scale with almost apocalyptic scenes. "Ball Lightning" is a must read for every connoisseur of hard science fiction.
