Politics: UK - A Setback For Socialism

(Drivebycuriosity) - It seemed that socialism was coming back. TV channels, newspapers & magazines are bad-mouthing capitalism and socialists like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and the shrill left-wing activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, rule the headlines. Almost everybody claims to be liberal "woke".

But suddenly there is a setback.  Last week the United Kingdom voted against socialism. The exit polls show that the British majority - including the working class - is smarter than all the pundits, social media influencers, journalists & university professors claim. The majority rejected Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn`s socialist ideas. History shows that socialism never works, we could learn that from the defunct Soviet Union, Eastern Germany, Cuba, Venezuela etc. Even the working class in"capitalist" West-Germany has been doing much better than in socialist East-Germany ( driveby ).

The majority also endorsed Brexit, a wise decision as well. Great Britain will do better when the country is not bossed around by the bureaucrats in Brussels. Over the years the European union became more bureaucratic & Byzantine. The European Commission (Brussels) has been gaining more and more power - developing the EU into something like the defunct Soviet Union, a bundle of states ruled by a central government. No wonder that the US leftwings loathes Brexit.

UK`s economy will be more flexible & efficient and more  attractive for international capital without the curbs of the EU rulers. The British could follow Switzerland, which was never member of the EU. Little Switzerland has a higher per-capita income as each of EU members and belongs to the wealthiest countries in the world. History supports Brexit. Around the year 1500 Europe became the world’s most dynamic civilization because of political fragmentation (split in many tiny countries) which caused competition between multiple independent states (bostonglobe). The Italian Renaissance occurred because a patchwork of independent city states, including Milan, Florence, Pisa, Siena, Genoa, Ferrara, Mantua, Verona and Venice, was competing against each other. This created a climate which fostered businesses, sciences & arts.

Next November the US elections will show if the American majority is as smart as the British. The Washington Post wrote in 2017: "Jeremy Corbyn’s success is a model for American progressives" ( washingtonpost). The Nation wrote April 2019: "Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn Might Create a Revolution" ( thenation). Sanders, Warren & AOC and their cheer-leading "woke" pundits, social media influencers, journalists & university professors may have a rude awakening.
