Traveling: Hiking In Coachella Valley

(Drivebycuriosity) - My wife and I stayed 10 nights in Palm Springs and explored the neighborhood of the Californian desert town. The weather was mixed. The first days greeted us with sunshine and temperatures around 70F (22C) but then came rain, the mercury column dropped to the 50s F and below (10C) and the mountain peaks got the noses powdered with snow. Anyway, we hiked 4 of the ubiquitous desert trails which go up onto the mountains which surround the Coachella Valley. I show here some images from these hikes.

Above some images from the Araby Trail which starts south of the town (araby). The sweat driving ascent rewards with great views.

The Kim Nicol Trail, close to Desert Hot Springs, some miles north of Palm Springs, leads through a rough & fascinating landscape (desertsun).

On the Randall Henderson Trail @ Rancho Mirage, some miles south of Palm Springs, I enjoyed, besides the views into the Coachella Valley, the mesquite and cholla cacti and spotted a hummingbird (rancho).

The Indio Hills Badlands Trail, close to Indio, a town about 20 miles south east of Palm Springs, which is also hosts of the famous  Coachella Festival, an all-you-can eat music event. went through a harsh desert landscape, which looked like a place on Mars, up onto some rocky hills (indio).

We also visited the Thousand Palms Oasis, a tiny place with strange & lush vegetation, a kind of rain forest in the desert, irrigated by water seeping out of the San Andreas Fault (thousand).

Stay tuned
