(Drivebycuriosity) - Rome is a treasure chamber full of art. Over many
centuries the eternal city was ruled by popes & cardinals who amassed enormous wealth including amazing architecture, paintings &
sculptures. The magnificent churches, which are spread all over the
city, are part of this treasure. They are the testimony that the city
has been the capital of powerful religious leaders, the popes, for 2000
years.
A day before we flew home my wife and I went to St. Peter's Basilica. There was the usual long line before the security checks but we made it in about 80 minutes. The majestic Renaissance church is worth the waiting time. The building - designed by by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini - is a marvel of Renaissance architecture & paintings (wikipedia).
St. Peter's is the largest church in the world which leads to a huge nave. Above a glance onto the enormous altar.
Both aisles, which flank the nave on the north and the south, are impressive as well.
The seemingly sky high ceilings are awesome.
The dome seems to open into space.
Above another dome.
A Look into one of the chapels.
Above more chapels, each a marvel of Renaissance art.
One of the cute little angels.
More cute little angels
The church maybe the leading temple of christianity, but you can find even some erotics there.
Enjoy!
