(Drivebycuriosity) - Rome has a great history. No wonder that the city is celebrating & conserving her past with spectacles & museums. Last Sunday we visited the Capitoline Museums (Musei Capitolini). They are build on the top of the Capitoline Hill, where the government of ancient Rome has been.
The museum has a nice collection of ancient Roman sculptures, including the massive bronze statue of emperor Marc Aurel you can see above, and fine Renaissance paintings.
My favorite is Caravaggio`s "St. John the Baptist" (oil on canvas).
But I also enjoyed the "Cumaean Sibyl" by Domenichino & the "Persian Sybil" by Guercio (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri). Both are eye cookies.
There are more nice paintings including “Allegory” by Simon Vouet & "Portrait of a Woman" by Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta.
"The Triumph of Bacchus"is a masterpiece as well. I like it better than the same name painting by y Diego Velázquez (Prado, Madrid).
Isn´t she pretty?
Who wants to mess with this warrior?
The museums belong to a great architectural plan designed by Michelangelo which includes a piazza and stairs with statues.
To be continued
