(Drivebycuriosity) - Rome is full of wonders. The Pantheon is the greatest of them. Last Tuesday we visited the ancient Roman temple, which was completed by the emperor Hadrian about 126 AD (wikipedia).
The Roman build this awesome dome with concrete. It is fascinating that this construction survived over 1900 years. It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, in large part because it has been in continuous use throughout its history, and since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a church. So the Pantheon escaped the fate of the Colosseum and other Roman buildings which have often been used as building material.
Besides the longevity the beauty of the construction is stunning. It is often copied all over the world in cathedrals and other buildings like the Capitol in Washington DC.
The open roof allows rain to fall on the ground ånd is handled by a drainage system below the floor.
Here a detail shot
I think the Pantheon belongs to the most beautiful buildings of the world.
The marble floor is also an eye catcher.
No wonder that the Pantheon attracts quite an audience. Watching them is part of the fun.
To be continued.
