Movies: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

(Drivebycuriosity) - Do you like alternate history? Quentin Tarantino`s newest movie, "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", tells an alternate version of Hollywood 50 years ago (imdb). In the year 1969 Hollywood flourished,  TV & movies boomed and the Manson family committed their grizzly murders.

The plot focuses on struggling & alcoholic TV-actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio ) and his friend, driver & former stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who shares a trailer with his pit bull. Both experience the 1969 Hollywood and have a lot encounters, which lead to surprising events  (this is a spoiler free blog. You can find a synopsis here wikipedia).

It seems that Quentin grew up. "Once upon" is less violent & bloody than usual.
I enjoyed watching the brilliant 70 mm version which transferred me into a flamboyant world, often bright, swinging & hilarious. The movie looks more like a Spielberg film than "Reservoir Dogs". But Tarantino also learned from Alfred Hitchcock. He shows us a beautiful picture, but also gives the audience the impression, that something is not quite right and he is feeding the foreboding that something bad might come up.

There are some misgivings. I didn´t like that kungfu icon Bruce Lee was shown as a clown & blowhard. This caricature seems to me inappropriate and racist. But anyway, I enjoyed watching DiCaprio, Brad Pit and the rest of the cast and was brilliantly entertained by this movie.

It was fun watching
