Contemporary Art: Jia Aili `s Combustion

(Drivebycuriosity) - It`s auction time again. Time for Manhattan`s massive art auctions at Christie`s, Sotheby´s & Phillips. As usual I went there to see their auction galleries. At Christie´s I discovered a huge tryptich by my favorite artist: Jia Aili, who lives and works in Beijing (
(born 1979 gagosian).

In 2019 I saw a show with a selection of works by the artist at Gagosian in Manhattans Chelsea districts (I posted here  ). I was impressed by his powerful and surreal creations.

The auction house Christie´s now displays one of these works, a triptych called "Combustion": Acrylic on canvas, in three parts, in artist's designated frame each canvas: 78 × 58⅛ in. (198 × 147.5 cm.). Painted in 2016. The painting is part of their 21rst Century Evening Sale.

Jia Aili explained in an interview "combustion in the general sense refers to the violent chemical reaction of luminescence and heat, and this process is also like the trajectory of individual consciousness. For me, it is more about Prometheus’s humanistic sentiment" (artnet).

Gagosian`s press release explained: In Jia`s paintings human figures, multidimensional geometries, and fragments of architecture, land, and machinery are juxtaposed to create what Jia calls “a structured constellation of history,” fusing past and present in kaleidoscopic amalgamations (exhibitions).

Because the triptych is so impressive and there are so many surreal details I display above the complete work  followed by a series of detail shots. Some image look like the set of a cutting-edge science fiction movie.
