Contemporary Art: Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963-2010, Impressions From An Exhibition

(Drivebycuriosity) - Do you like contemporary art? Then you might enjoy a current exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City (MoMA): Alibis: Sigmar Polke 1963-2010 (moma). This is a retrospective of the work of one of the leading contemporary artists of the world (wikipedia).

The show runs through August 3, 2014. The exhibition will travel to Tate Modern, London, where it will stay from October 2014 through  February 2015, then it will move to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Köln), Germany. Visiting one of these shows is highly recommended.

The German artist, who lived from 1941–2010, was one of the most voraciously experimental artists of the 20th century. According to the catalogue the retrospective is the first to encompass the unusually broad range of mediums Polke worked in during his five-decade career. His works include paintings, photographies, films, sculptures, drawings, prints, television, performance, and stained glass. The curators praise his constant, highly innovative blurring of the boundaries between these mediums.

                       A Kind Of Art Chameleon

The exhibition (some 250 works) is segmented in 10 galleries which focuse on different epochs of his working life. A walk though the retrospective showes how Polke´s styles and perceptions changed over the times. I was impressed by the variety of his works. Polke was a kind of art chameleon and created over the times an universe of its own.

                               Lust To Provoke

A lot of Polke´s works reflect the political and social situation in these times. Other work show the pure lust to provoke, to develop something new and to find new ways. My favorites are his large-sized paintings where he could let off his steam and elaborate his ideas.

Because of the abundance of the material and a (more or less stritclty enforced) photography prohibition in the museum I can show here just some impressions. But anyway, let the pictures speak for themselves.

Enjoy!
