(Drivebycuriosity) - It`s fall again, the time for New York`s huge autumn art auctions. After last year`s pandemic break the global auction houses are back with new shows. After visiting Christie`s & Sotheby`s my wife and I went to Phillips, the number 3 on the global auction market to see the exhibition for their 20th Century & Contemporary Art auctions ( phillips).
The company has the reputation to be more focused on contemporary works
than her bigger competitors and to show more cutting edge art by
up-and-coming artists. But they also had some big names. I display here
some of my favorites from the exhibition - a very subjective
selection as usual.
Above you can see Francis Bacon`s "Pope with Owls" (oil on canvas, 1958). The painting - obviously inspired by El Greco`s "Pope" (ca. 1600) - is the star of the exhibition, followed by Cecily Brown `s "Untitled" (oil on canvas, 2007).
Joan Mitchell`s "Untitled" (oil on canvas, 1992) belongs to the highlights as well.
Luc Tuymans` "Wallpaper" (oil on canvas, 2014) also got a representative wall place.
I was happy to see this elegant piece by Gerhard Richter: "Weiß (White)" (oil on canvas, 1988).
I am a fan of the amazing Mark Tansey as well and welcomed his "Garden" (oil on canvas, 2006).
Apparently there is no auction without George Condo. His "Collision Course" (acrylic, charcoal, wax crayon, pastel and paper collage on linen, 2009) is funny as usual.
Above a selection of works by uprising artists: Hurvin Anderson`s "Country Club—Mixed Doubles" (oil and acrylic on canvas, 2011) followed by Jamian Juliano-Villani`s "Last Resort" (acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 2014); Daniel Crews-Chubb`s "Wild Blood (Blue)" (oil, sand, spray paint, charcoal, pastel and collage on canvas, 2015) & Farley Aguilar`s "The Rocking Chair" (oil on canvas, 2017).
I was fascinated by Zsolt Bodoni`s "Turul's Sword" (acrylic and oil on canvas, 2009).
And there were more discoveries: Ewa Juszkiewicz`s "Girl in Blue" (oil on cnavas, 2013) & Ben Sledsens` "Bear in the Deep Woods" (oil and acrylic on canvas, 2018-2019)
"Face Your Fears" by RISK (found metal objects,2019)
Hilary Harkness` "Deep Roll Dive" (oil on panel, 2002) is too complex for just one image.
Above "Bronze Shoes" by Yayoi Kusama (bronze-painted shoes with pillow assemblage, 1999)
To be continued
