Movies: About "Dune" And The Slow Suicide Of The Cinema Theaters

(Drivebycuriosity) - The new "Dune" movie got rave reviews (imdb ). After seeing the magic of Denis Villeneuve`s "Blade Runner 2049" I wanted to enjoy this director´s version of the science fiction classic on a really big screen to get the full cinema experience. I missed the debut week of "Dune" and tried to watch the film in the second week on one of the Imax, RPX, ScreenY or other huge fancy screens. Unfortunately the cinema theaters had moved the "Dune" movie into smaller rooms. So I watched the film at home on the tv screen.

Apparently movie theaters behave like shops who decide which products are offered on their shelves. Being educated as an economist I can somewhat understand that. But what about movie lovers? Don´t they deserve to see great movies on great screens - at least for two or three weeks? Is this too much to ask? Apparently cinema owners don´t care much about cineastes. But - fortunately for movie geeks -  the cinema houses have to compete with Netflix, Prime, HBO Max and other streamers. They should not be surprised if they lose more customers to the streamers - they don`t deserve them.

The movie came up to the elevated expectations - even on the smaller screen of my humble home cinema theater. "Dune" is a visual masterpiece and I was amazed by the desert landscape in combination with the brutalist (cyperpunk?) technology. But I would have liked to see more from the sand worms and where was the visualization of the magic of "spice". Maybe Part 2 (expected for 2023) will show more. I am looking forward to see the second part, maybe then on a really huge screen.
