Contemporary Art: Georg Baselitz & More @ Chelsea Galleries, New York

(Drivebycuriosity) - Visiting New York`s Chelsea district is always rewarding. There are so many important art galleries, a Mecca for art lovers. Recently we went to one of the Gagosian dependences to see their show "Georg Baselitz: Jumping over my Shadow" (522 West 21 Street, through October 29, 2016 gagosian). According to the press releases "in the 1960s, Georg Baselitz emerged as a pioneer of German Neo-Expressionist painting. His work evokes disquieting subjects rendered feverishly as a means of confronting the realities of the modern age, and explores what it is to be German and a German artist in a postwar world" (baselitz). If you are in Germany you can see work by this artist at Hamburg´s contemporary art museum Deichtorhallen ( deichtorhallen).

I display here my favorites from the show, a very subjective selection as usual. Let the images speal fro themselves.

Above you can see some installation views.

The sculpture above this paragraph is called "Zero Mobil (Zero Mobile)" (2014,
Patinated copper, 36 1/4 × 111 13/16 × 31 1/2 inches (92 × 284 × 80 cm).

                      Lieber Marcel Duchamp

Above you can see "La rivoluzione di dietro - J.B" (2015, Oil on canvas, 189 × 118 1/8 inches (480 × 300 cm) followed by "Lieber Marcel Duchamp, das haben sie doch von Picasso gestohlen! (Dear Marcel Duchamp, You Stole That from Picasso!)" (2016, Oil on canvas, 161 7/16 × 120 1/16 inches (410 × 305 cm).

                             American Exodus

But Chelsea has more. Above you can see some images from Nancy Hoffman Gallery (nancyhoffman). They showed "Hung Liu: American Exodus".

I found the photo-realistic paintings from Brooklyn @ George Billis Gallery (georgebillis). The artist is Derek Buckner.

The pics above this paragraph were taken @ James Cohan (jamescohan).

Galerie Lelong displayed "Sara Cain: Dark Matter" (galerielelong). In spite of the name tag the show was neither dark nor invisible as you can see. Did they sell the floor with the paintings?

Alexander Gray Associates displayed new work by Joan Semmel, a series of self-images considering aging (alexandergray).

Enjoy!
