Photography: Koh Samui - Visiting The Big Buddha

(Drivebycuriosity) - It seems that Buddhist Thailand has more temples, called Wat, then Italy has churches. Even tiny island Koh Samui is sprinkled with Wats. On Thursday we went to visit the Big Buddha temple, officially named Wat Phra Yai. The complex is on a tiny island at the corner between the north and east coast. The 12-metre-high (39-foot) gold-painted Buddha statue was constructed 1972 ( wikipedia).

The giant Buddha statue is surrounded by the typical construction, fancifully painted as usual.

There are the usual Buddhas and other sculptures of course.

I spotted these fanciful mermaids and companions on the shore of the temple island.

To be continued
