Science Fiction: Eversion By Alastair Reynolds

(Drivebycuriosity) - Alastair Reynolds belongs to my favorite science fiction authors. His novels and short stories belong to the best what contemporary scifi can offer.
Reynolds has a PhD in physics and started his career as research astronomer for the European Space Research and Technology Centre (part of the European Space Agency) until 2004 when he left to pursue writing full-time ( wikipedia). But he also has a lot of fantasy and excellent writing skills.

His newest novel "Eversion" is told in first person and begins in the early 19th century ( amazon). The protagonist works as a surgeon on a fifth class ship traveling north along the coast of Norway. This is a spoiler free blog so I don`t tell you the rest of the story. But there are many radical changes.

In the begin the novel reads like written by Jack London but turns into cutting edge hard science fiction with elements of horror, as typical for Reynold`s tales. And the ending is a marvel.

I enjoyed how the plot developed, a elaborate mixture of classical adventure story and space opera with lots of philosophical musings & a shot of romance. "Eversion" is the proof that Reynolds belongs to the creme of contemporary science fiction writers and I want to read more by him.
